Mao Zedong's Former Residence

Mao Zedong's Former Residence () was built in the late Qing Dynasty. It is located in Shaoshan Village of Shaoshan township in Shaoshan City, Xiangtan prefecture, Hunan Province, China. The building was the birthplace and childhood home of Mao Zedong, the first leader of the People's Republic of China. It has a building area of about 472.92 square meters, embodies buildings such as the old houses (), the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall (), the statue of Mao Zedong (), the Cultural relics Exhibition Hall (), Dishui Hole ().

In 1893, Mao Zedong was born here, and he lived here about 17 years.
In 1910, Mao Zedong went out for study.〔
In 1912, Mao Zedong returned home, mobilized his relatives to join the revolution ().〔
In 1925 and 1927, Mao Zedong returned home after leading the Peasant Movement in Guangzhou, to start a similar movement in Hunan.().〔
In 1929, Kuomintang Nationalist Government in Nanjing confiscated the house and it was destroyed by a local officer.
In 1950, the People's Government of Shaoshan City () rebuilt the house and in May, Mao Zedong's eldest son Mao Anying returned home and visited here.
The residence opened as a museum and on February 6, 1951, the People's Government of Shaoshan City named it ''The Chinese people's great leader Chairman Mao's House'' ().〔
In 1954, it was renamed ''Mao Zedong's Former Residence''.〔
On June 25, 1959, Mao Zedong returned home and visited here.〔
In 1961, it was listed as a "Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level" () by the State Council of China.
In 1966, in the Cultural Revolution (), the number of tourists was inflated. The site was open at all times of the day or night.
On June 27, 1983, Deng Xiaoping wrote "Mao Zedong's Former Residence" on the horizontal tablet.〔
On December 20, 1993, the CPC Secretary General Jiang Zemin () attended the unveiling of the statue of Mao Zedong outside the house.
In July 1997, it was listed as a ''National Patriotic Education Base'' () by the Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China.
In December 2004, it was closed for rebuilding and repairs.
